Join me on a visual exploration of Puanga, through my soul’s eyes.
An abstraction of thoughts and feelings – a layering of perception, of genetic memory, of fractured light, of soul in flight.
My cultural identity and te taiao combined, are an endless source of creative awe to inform and inspire my painting practice.
Binding earth to sky and night to day – Rangi is represented by the whetu and Papa the fern fronds, laid out in layers to create a unified, interconnected whole. Through my soul’s eyes, there is no separation.
These paintings represent the waka navigations of voyaging tupuna, pushing outward across Moana nui a Kiwa, the Pacific Ocean – like the tide, returning on waves of human experience.
Atua are reflected in ancient geometry using repetition and symmetry for balance. Patterns laid out like a map, on an ocean of positive (tapu) and negative (noa) space. Patterns that expand and contract, creating a sense of movement and direction. The horizon line forever stretching out across the vastness like a promise, a gift of the known and the great unknown.
